Day 9 THE RING ROAD: Jökulsárlón - Skógafoss - Seljavallalaug

Day 9 | 16th July
Jökulsárlón - Skógafoss - Seljavallalaug

Hey guysss! Alright so right after our fateful glacier morning at Skaftafell which all turned out better than we thought lol, we went to our end point of our Ring Road trip which was the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon basically are giant ice bergs floating on the lake with a backdrop of I believe is the Vatnajokull. Yes it is that hugeee!

1. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
You may relax and check out the pretty cool floating ice bergs.
There's actually a boat service that takes you across and a little up close and personal with the ice bergs. But of course we didn't take that. & I believe it's chargeable for a small price.
I don't know if I'm crazy or something but do you see the Elvis Presley face? Tell me you do too! I don't know if someone did it intentionally or it's a coincidence. If it's a coincidence, welllll damnnnn!
It actually was reallyyy cold! I couldn't feel my fingers
& it's time to U-turn! Since we had some time, we decided to drop by some of the stops that we skipped earlier along the way.
#onlyinIceland will you have such view out your windshield

2. Skógafoss Waterfall
It was a pretty long drive from Jökulsárlón all the way to Skógafoss. This was actually one of the first few destinations that we had to stop. Approximately 230km laterr.....we're here!
This is another one of my favourite waterfalls we've seen in Iceland. It's sooo amazing!
Literally breathtaking. I can't even....
Somehow, this angle looks like a little scene from Hobbit lol
You could actually climb up and check out the view from the top. But we didn't. & by now, I'm sure you know why lol.
I decided to go up close to see the waterfall. It was really amazing. The fresh air and of course a ton of water droplets. It's like I got a shower
Even on iphone, the place still looks as lovely
& driving to our final stop!

3. Seljavallalaug Pool, Raufarfellsvegur
While I was in Iceland, I knew of a local fellow Singaporean who went to this place & I was like scouring through the internet to find this place. And I found it! It's actually a rather 'hidden' gem. True enough we were slightly doubtful if the place existed or not. But with my thorough research, many of them said that it may seem like it's not there, but it's definitely there.
It is basically a natural geothermal pool with the hot spring water coming from the mountains.

Directions I got from Tripadvisor:
  • Via Route 1 before Skogafoss and turn left to road 242 to Raufarfell (From Reykjavik)
  • Drive toward the end of the gravel road (Seljavellir) following the valley opens in front of you
  • At the end of the gravel road there’s a parking lot, park there. There will be a house on the left.
  • Follow the rocky pathway. Actually there's not much of a pathway more like a field of rocks. Just walk straight and across.
  • Followed by a stream, cross it. There's no path for the stream besides some 'makeshift rocks bridge'. Your shoes will get wet.
  • Continue about 10 mins on the pathway following your instincts. Lol I know it sounds really vague but really follow it.
  • & soon you will see first the source of the hot springs and then the pool.

Do note that the place is unkept with a pretty interesting changing room you see there with moses on the ground. So we changed outside surrounded by mountains. How epic! Plus there was literally nobody there, sooo whateves right
When we arrived there were two people in it but they left soon after.

And then it's time to leaveee. Our very final stop of our road trip.
It was rather bitter sweet after realizing it was our last stop. oh & it was like 10pm lol. Times like these where we're thankful for the no nightfall situation.
The was probably one of the darker nights we've experienced in Iceland. Though it got more darker towards Reykjavik. Though of course not as dark as our Singapore pitch black skies.

Anywho, final thoughts on the hidden pool. Definitely a place you should check out! In terms of the pool experience, I'm not gonna lie, I was slightly irked by the mossy pool floors. So we wore our shoes in the pool. Sure, the pool water is natural but it's not as hot as I would've liked. It's only warm and slightly warmer further away from the house. Other than that, it's not much of a geothermal pool. I don't think I would swim in it again lol. But it can't beat the experience that we swam in the pool of a hidden gem tucked away in South Iceland.

& with that we are done with our road trip. After this we got back into our car and drove back to our airbnb apartment. The drive back was kinda the hardest. I was sooo tired, I was kinda delusional on the road which I know is really dangerous. I even thought of stopping somewhere and sleeping for awhile. Nevertheless, we made it back safely & superrr tired.

Have a great weekend!
